My duty in the delivery room should be on 3:00 but I was at school at 10:30 to ask some of my classmate if i can borrow their scrub suits... unfortunately, IFS cant lend me hers. I was so releived when I learned that they have already replenished their stock yesterday so i went to the College of Nursing and Midwifery faculty to get mine. But because of my, i think, my own recklessness, i forgot to bring my smack gown, which is worn over the suit whenever you're out of the DR, so I just asked ACS if I can borrow hers. She said yes and gave me a free lunch at their house. I was at the hospital at 2:30, we were met by our CI, Maam C, and told us to change to our scrub suits (we are not allowed to wear our suits outside the delivery room, except if we are wearing a smack gown. But if ever we tried wearing the suit outside with the gown, I am sure that we'll look really stupid, plus it's raining so we might contaminate our pants). We were given a quick orientation about the subject... she said that it is really nice that we were just fresh from the OB ward since she said that this might sparked a little curiosity to us about what happened to the women that we took care of last week. She also told us about team spirit and other regulation inside the hospital. Since we were too many, we're 15, she only allowed us, the first five, to come with her inside the DR for a follow up orientation about the DR and everything in there. In the middle of orientation, a woman was carried inside, she had a miscarriage so she was immediately readied for a D&C or Dilation and Curettage.... according to WIKIPEDIA D&C is..." a gynecological procedure performed on the female reproductive system that used to be a common method of abortion. The procedure involves dilating the cervix and inserting instruments to clean out the lining of the uterus, which can include an embryo or fetus, while the woman is under an anaesthetic. A curettage is performed with a curette, a metal rod with a handle on one end and a sharp loop on the other." The Doctor immediately performed the procedure. I cant focus on the orientation. I had a glimpse of what was happening at our backs, and I was greatly horrified when i saw gushes of blood dripped from the woman's vagina. It was really scary. Then while my CI was instructing us about the records, the doctor asked for an assistant. It was our first time inside the DR so we pointed at each other. A nurse was enraged by this. She said that we shouldnt be taking nursing if we're this scared. So HB was chosen. We left him inside. HB handled the procedure. When the doctor asked for HB's assistant, (HB acted as the Sterile nurse, he cannot touch anything unsterile, so they need a clean nurse to give him and the doctor the gudgets that they needed). NFA, AxA, and yours truly were away so AnA had no choice but to go inside, I saw him took off his gown, put his surgical cap, mask and Operating Room shoes. After many minutes, our CI called us if we wanted to observe. I was braver then so I hastily changed my clothings and went with NFA inside. I was in the right time when the Doctor asked HB to widen the Vagina opening by his forceps. He grabbed the metal instrument and clipped it to the upper portion of the vagina's mouth and he pulled it. The woman, as how we've seen her earlier was in a lithotomy position (legs wide apart and raised). The spotlight was directed between her legs while the doctor scraped all the blood, all the masses inside. The blood dripped from the opening and on the slide-shape funnellike metal device that was put in front of her vagina. Then everything dropped straight into the pail. The doctor put the small (2or 3cm long) fetus in a vial. The doctor asked HB to wipe the woman's vulva afterward with the sterile gauze. It was his first time. Then he was ordered by our CI to cloth her with the diaper. The woman was staring blankly at the ceiling and then she started to twitch her legs. Then she moaned. I asked my CI why was she behaving like this and she told me that it was just the effect of the anesthesia. He cant put the diaper so NFA and I carried the woman's legs (NFA carried the left and I the right). I was wearing a mask but I can still smel the putrid odor of the blood from the pail. The woman was later carried off to the OB ward where she stated wailing loudly "Papa ko!" incessantly. She's still under the anesthesia's power. After then, the next five were called by our CI to resume the orientation. A woman from the labor room was sent to the DR. AMA (she handled the case) and RAA (acted as the assistant) were left inside. After 30 or 45 minutes, after HB,AnA and I had our dinner in the canteen, they went out and told us their experience. It was really amazing. AMA said "di ba pag baby sabi nila dapat daw handle with care, pero dun iba... para akong naghihila ng biik." I am so excited, I do not have a duty today because of a meeting I only went to school to buy a book and i'll really am going to study hard tonight. im so excited. |
